  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from zonie -- Outstanding book for anyone with any interest in Antarctica : This book is quite amazing. Many historical facts as well as information about shipboard activities and experiences through a very difficult cruise in Antarctic waters aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter and icebreaker USCGC Glacier, WAGB-4. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jason Rupert -- Shackleton Redux! : “The Weddell Sea is, according to the testimony of all who have sailed through the berg filled waters, the most treacherous and dismal region on earth.” – Historian Thomas R. Henry ( Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Heather B -- Thrilling true story of an icebreaker's Antarctic adventure : I really enjoyed Wind, Fire, Ice. Bunes is a fine story teller who kept me engaged page after page, which, for me, is unusual for a work of nonfiction. I have an interest in the area having read a lot about Shackleton and other Arctic / Antarctic explorers, but I think even if you don't you will find this book interesting because of the wonderful scenery descriptions, inherent dangers of sailing in the Antarctic and the colorful characters onboard the ship. Bunes was a newly qualified doctor who volunteered to be on the icebreaker. However being the new medical officer meant he wasn't really one of the crew or accepted as a regular naval officer, which gave him an interesting perspective on the dynamics onboard. In charge of the whole ship and crew is a CO driven by a single-minded purpose that puts the crew and ship in danger. As the ice closes in on the Glacier, tensions mount onboard. Will the ship and crew will have to overwinter in one of the most unforgiving landscapes on earth? Read it to find out! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from John Ehrhart -- I didn't want to put it down ! : This is a fascinating recount of the voyage of the largest US icebreaker into the Weddell Sea in the Antarctic over 50 years ago, through the eyes of the young ship's doctor. The difficulties of the medical emergencies, the descriptions and stories of the crew members, and the overall challenges of the ship in hostile seas and crushing ice had me caught up from start to finish. Woven into this was a running narrative of the historical experiences and disasters of Antarctic explorers before them, of oceans and dangerous currents, ice shelves , islands, sea creatures and the Antarctic continent. It was an adventure story and fascinating walk through Antarctic history that I wasn't expecting, and I couldn't put it down. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Robert Cooper M.D. -- Amazing personal experiences. : This book by Dr. Robert Bunes is an exciting, interesting, and rare story of a young doctor’s experiences in Antarctica. He writes openly and genuinely about his experiences in an environment most of us will never live through. He provides information and challenges involving Antarctica travel. I can imagine his becoming an Antarctica-bound cruise ship guest lecturer. He colorfully describes his shipmates and how they coped with potentially fatal challenges. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Social Science Researcher -- Excellent memoir on life in the USCG : Dr. Robert M. Bunes volunteered to serve on an ice breaker (called the Glacier) headed to Antarctica in the U.S. Coast Guard at the height of the Vietnam War. Bunes explains he didn’t agree with the war, but he also wanted to serve his country. The Public Health Service offered a way to serve without having to serve directly in Vietnam.
