  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Aaron S. Berman -- A work to be read and reread : In this book of deeply personal essays, Brown’s prose is poetic, candid and precise. Though she spends much of this work sharing her experiences as a disabled person navigating a world that, both emotionally and geographically, makes few concessions, this is about much more than that. At its heart, it does what literature is supposed to do but so seldom does: it wrestles with what it is to be human, any human; doing so with humility, wonder, and at times, bewilderment. It might also offer one of the strongest insights into the role that faith plays in American politics today. This is a voice that does not have it all figured out, but only asks why we haven’t asked some pretty fundamental questions about life up till now. In short, a modern classic. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Longleaf -- BEAUTIFUL : Beautiful lucid writing about the paradox of human soul and corporeality. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Zoe -- Gorgeous : I will be reading and rereading for years to come. I highly recommend it, especially for those with chronic illnesses or chronic pain. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kelly G. -- Company on the Road : Ms. Brown has written a collection of essays about her life and spirit and how they have been shaped by having cerebral palsy. Her emotions are often tangled and prickly but are honest and not overly "decorated." I have cerebral palsy myself and truly related to the author's sorrow over what her body will no longer do and her distrust of love. I laughed several times and cried once. I've been telling friends to read this one. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from ari -- gorgeous, poetry-like prose : The author's insights are fascinating and raw and I kept being struck by her stunning use of language. There are so many glimmering gems in here. I read it from the library and then bought a copy for home so I can keep poring through it. Really amazing work ( Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2021 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from RockinR -- Political Comments Ruined Book : I stopped reading due to the injection of unnecessary divisive political content. Too bad...seemed like it would be a nice read but the comments ruined it for me. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Melissa Stephenson -- Stunning and Eloquent : What a book-- it's a good one to read slowly and savor, then read again. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ruby Gem -- Brilliant : I have the same disability as the author and I felt exactly the same way when I read Shelley's Frankenstein. This is a heartfelt insightful read. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 13, 2021 )
